Sketch out in your sketchbook or in on the computer if you feel comfortable...work in illustrator to come up with symbols that represent the five businesses that you researched for last class. These can be in rough format and as many symbols as you can. This is a sketching process...I would like to see effort but I'm not demanding a certain number per business. Don't settle on your first one because like the pictograms...your first idea isn't always your best one. Work through it that's part of the process of art. Think about the symbols and the reasons for shapes and numbers included in that shape.
Secondly, get started on brainstorming some associations for your second set of five businesses. These need to eventually have logotype (font) and a symbol. So start by coming up with a list of associations or things you could put in the logo and fonts to put them in / similar to what you did with the first set but just in the sketchbook...doesn't need to be translated to the computer if you don't gravitate that way. Start in on sketching out things/ideas and fonts that you might think would be interesting to communicate the overall feel of the business. I would like you to focus mostly on the first set for Thursday. This second set you'll have some time to work on...but I just would like to get the brain juices flowing on these as well.
Come prepared to have a work day in class on Thursday.
