ASSIGNMENT 13 - Tues. April 7

DUE MONDAY:
Your in-class poster assignment glued printed off and glued into your sketchbook. At least 5 pages of preliminary sketching work in your sketchbooks for your environmental point of display / advertisement and movie poster. This needs to be a combo of mind maps (aka associations) and sketches. You also need to have your poster in draft form on the computer. Make sure that you have contacted your director of your film and that you get the information that you need for your project. Don't forget about some easy extra credit is also due. See specifications from last post concerning that project.

DUE THURSDAY (April 9th):

MOVIE POSTER Requirements
Poster needs to be 11x17 - in color if design calls for it.
The title of the poster needs to be addressed in some sort of logotype treatment or logo itself.
The poster must also have some sort of tagline addressing or enticing the viewer to watch the movie. The addition of awards and honors might also be included on the poster - must be true however (no fake ones...aka Toronto film festival, etc)
The poster must also include information concerning: the director, writer, producer, music, main stars of cast, production company logo and or studio.

Environmental Pt of Display
If you choose to go this route. It needs to be to scale. Can be a dimensional cardboard cut out that fits within the theme of your movie and or poster and or it can be a 2-D cutout that stands up. Use foam board and mount your design to the piece with spray fixative. Be very careful of craftsmanship. Ragged cuts and loose points will not be acceptable and will be subtracted from your overall grade of the piece.

Newspaper / Magazine Ad
You will need both a newspaper advertisement at 1/4 of a page in black and white and a full page magazine ad in color. This should go with the theme of your poster and should not be exactly the same as your poster. It should be the development of a campaign that reinforces your brand and is specifically designed to the specifications. If you choose this option be sure to include your critique what the publication is that you intend these to be placed and why your design reflects the ideals of that target market. All of these need to be framed and mounted for presentation as well in a separate clip frame from the poster.

Don't forget to write your summary as well. There will be specifics concerning the style of the summary given in class on Tuesday.

ASSIGNMENT 9 - Tues. March 10

Please print off your UBER logo in color if needed. With the formating described in class (GillSans /11 pt / bottom right hand corner / right aligned text box / 10 elements need to be defined out in this list - format ex. below)

01_McDonalds
02_Do Dahs
03_J&P Auto
etc.

Have these printed on 8.5x11 / portrait (vertical style) and ready to go up on Tues.

Also...have all your logos printed and ready to be looked over in black & white on 8.5x11 on Tuesday next week. Each one needs to have appropriate white space centered / portrait format. We will have a individual critique in class over these roughs on Tuesday.

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

ASSIGNMENT 8 - Thursday, March 5th

Have your UBER logo ready for an in-class mini critique on Thursday (this means on the comptuer / no summary due / no dress up) You will after today be expected to have a copy of this Uber Logo in your sketchbook.

counter. The exception in the lower curve part of a lowercase g.

Sunday, March 1, 2009

ASSIGNMENT 7 - Tues. March 3rd

Mini Critique on Tuesday. This will be over five initial logos. Please have these ready to go on the computer in most final form possible. We'll just be traveling from computer to computer (again mini critique not a full critique)- so no need to dress up or summary, but be ready to discuss decisions made for logo and logo type to reflect back on business as a whole.

So recap: first five logos / must have logotype (font of business name) and symbol (logo) to encapsulate the overall feel and need for the business.

Second five logos / need to be in the works. These will have only a logo and or logotype separate (so just one of the other) if logo isn't enough...just do the type. These need to be the works...do sketchbook page for development on each. Thursday I will be checking sketchbook pages for progress so be prepared.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

ASSIGNMENT 6 - Thurs. Feb. 26

Sketch out in your sketchbook or in on the computer if you feel comfortable...work in illustrator to come up with symbols that represent the five businesses that you researched for last class. These can be in rough format and as many symbols as you can. This is a sketching process...I would like to see effort but I'm not demanding a certain number per business. Don't settle on your first one because like the pictograms...your first idea isn't always your best one. Work through it that's part of the process of art. Think about the symbols and the reasons for shapes and numbers included in that shape.

Secondly, get started on brainstorming some associations for your second set of five businesses. These need to eventually have logotype (font) and a symbol. So start by coming up with a list of associations or things you could put in the logo and fonts to put them in / similar to what you did with the first set but just in the sketchbook...doesn't need to be translated to the computer if you don't gravitate that way. Start in on sketching out things/ideas and fonts that you might think would be interesting to communicate the overall feel of the business. I would like you to focus mostly on the first set for Thursday. This second set you'll have some time to work on...but I just would like to get the brain juices flowing on these as well.

Come prepared to have a work day in class on Thursday.

GRADING SCALE

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know that I realized that my grading scale in the syllabus is screwed up. I adhere to the Union standard scale which is as follows:

GRADING
All assignments will be assessed on a 100 pt scale. Grade equivalents are established via school catalogue and are as follows:

95 to 100 A
94 to 85 B
84 to 75 C
74 to 65 D
65 to 0 F

Sorry for any confusion...remember this blog also acts in conjunction with the syllabus. / Also thank you to a certain person for mentioning this early on...I apologize I'm just now getting a chance to check it out.

Thursday, February 19, 2009

ASSIGNMENT 5 - Tues, Feb. 24

SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT:

Do some digging around in the yellow-pages and find 10 businesses that look like they need help and or look interesting. Select them out and write them down in your sketchbook along with their contact information. Next take five of those businesses and make a graphically designed layout in Illustrator with all the words that you would associate with that business. Please do this in fonts that somehow match with the theme or tone of this business. Similar to the feelings - range that was discussed in class. These five pages should be then printed on 8.5x11 and pasted into your sketchbook.

EX.
Gateway Tire - tires, rims, tread, black, rolling, car jack, bolts, screws, stranded, help, money, silver, etc. (then imagine this on a cool layout and repeat five times)

Remember to keep in mind the ideas of balance, symmetry, asymmetry, value, contrast, line, proximity, how your eye travels around the page and most importantly white space!

FYI

Just an FYI...I've been informed by your classmates that Hobby Lobby and Books a Million seem to be out of the 8.5x11 sketchboooks. Please go the next size up which I believe is 11x14 so you can easily fit your 8.5x11 printed pages easily. Thanks.

Professor Eckley

ASSIGNMENT 1 - Tues, 10th

DUE TUESDAY - Bring 8.5 x11 sketchbook, hard bound to class in black or blue. You can find these at Hobby Lobby and or Books-A-Million. In the sketchbook have a map of "things you are attracted to" / "visual likes." Make this map on 8.5x11 / printed on the black and white printer. Make it fun and visually interesting. Be sure to experiment with InDesign. Push a few buttons and have some fun exploring the program. I'm attaching a few photos of other mind maps just for ideas of what they can look like.

Welcome to Class

Hi Class,

Here is a great way to make sure that you have all your homework / assignments etc. However, it is only as useful as you make it. This blog will be taking the "dog" right out of the "dog ate my homework" excuse. Don't even think about saying "I didn't know what my assignment was." Responsibility falls on you, just like the real world.

I will also be posting on a regular basis. Competition deadlines, interesting articles and internship opportunities. Make sure to check this on a daily basis, because blogger is our friend. Make the most out of him.
