Make sure that it is glued up and functional. Don't throw the others away. Take photographs of all the other roughs...these will go in your job folder.

For Wednesday

Hi guys,

Don't forget to take a photo of your labels and two boxes for your job folder (handmade ones). For Wednesday, please have your four boxes printed out and put together. Bring your bottle so you can try out the labels. Two of the versions should be the versions that you did by hand on the first set of roughs. Please make these as accurate (correct labels, think in the round). The other two versions need be in the opposite direction of the first drafts. If you went modern go vintage. If you went minimal go crazy. Have some fun with these. You would be surprised how the wacky and crazy might just push that product over the edge. Be sure to be referencing your thumbnails and your in store research to see how your product stands out next to others.

Don't forget about the AIGA cook out tonight at 5 pm. Bring a dessert / coke or chips to the Bowld grills tonight. Will still happen if raining will just make sure that we  are under the porch. Last shindig before next semester. Invite some freshman to come and eat with us as well. See you then!

Monday, May 6th

Hi Guys,

Hopefully the typography and illustrations samples that you saw in class today helped spark a few ideas. For Monday, please scan in your box use it as a template. Create two built boxes off the template. Draw your rough on the 3D box. (can do while flat as well...but need to bring in the built box.) For your bottle rough...please make two labels out of regular paper. Cut them out and bring your bottle. We will take a photo of the label taped onto your bottle for your job folder. Your two boxes will also be represented by a photo in your job folder. See you on Monday.

Don't forget the AIGA cookout on Monday! 5 pm at the Bowld grills. Bring a dessert / chips or drink. I'll provide buns, hotdogs, burgers and condiments. See you then!

FOR FRIDAY
Please have you thumbnails done and in your job folder with your research. Print off two pages of pictures of your aisle where your product is located to go with your 10 pages of research.

Have you box and bottle that you are going to use for the project to make a template out of. This is essential because we make roughs of the packages in 3D form for this project so please have this item so we can get a good start on next week's round of roughs.

Please put the photos that you took today into a document (again layout counts as bonus points). Label them and number to 22. Have this printed out and in hand at the start of class on Friday. If not printed out before 8 am will have a late grade attached to it.

Wednesday, May 1

Keep working on thumbnails. Look to those inspiration sites for ideas. Have you product decided on. Make sure to bring your sketchbook to class with notes on Wednesday.

Friday, April 26, 2013

Monday, April 29

Redesign a box structure and a bottle. These can be put together aka a holder and bottle if you choose or can be separate brands. If choose to do separate brands the products need to go together in function. (ex. bathing suit / sun screen). The brands chosen must be a lower quality or lesser known brand (off brand)...we are trying to make this look as functional in your portfolio in possible. So in other words doing Coke or a really well known brand wouldn't look as real in your portfolio as doing a local or lesser known brand.

Due on Monday in job folder
RESEARCH
5 pages of research on box
5 pages of research on bottle
If same company for both 10 pages of research / check out competition / background on company / product line.

Due in job folder on FRIDAY (was Wednesday, but we will make it a little later to give you guys more time to check out ideas and decide on your product)
THUMBNAILS
50 thumbnails for box
50 thumbnails for bottle
25 thumbnails for box brand logo / logotype
25 thumbnails for bottle brand logo / logotype
If same company for both (box & bottle) complete 50 thumbnails for logo / logotype. You may do a computer font page of logotypes if this would help you thumbnail quicker for this section.

Hint on the thumbnails....go shopping. See what stands out on the shelf. Ask why? Check out bottle / box shape...could this fit your package and make it stand out on the shelf? Think about colors. Looks / fonts.

Wednesday, April 10th

Hi everyone,

Don't forget about attending tonight and or tomorrow's film festival. Go and support your director and go vote. Also we always sponsor a prize of best film campaign which the audience votes on. There are a $25 prize attached to the award. So get your friends to vote for you and maybe you can buy them ice cream? Prizes will be awarded on Tuesday night at 9 pm so I would be there just in case your film campaign might win.

In other news, contact your candidates quickly. Turn around your research, visual brief and thumbnails for your job folder on Wednesday. Please have a direction to head with your roughs. You will have okay these roughs with your client in order to finish your final. We will talk about the job approval form that they will have sign in order for your material to be put up on campus. See you Wednesday!

One more item - come to AIGA tonight at 5:30 pm. We need to finalize the poster sale materials. See you then!

Candidates are finally in

Hi everyone,

Again, even your professor has to deal with clients and delays...we finally got our list of students and who is running contested. Thankfully it just works out. Now again...due to the late nature of this I don't expect to have thumbnails and lot for Monday. If you get a chance to contact your client before class great but things are not getting inspected until Wednesday so you have some time to make your contact. Kind of rushes the back end of things but I have faith that you all will turn out fine:)

Here's the list with emails where I am not posting emails on the blog.

Monday, April 8th

Hi everyone,

I will be pushing out the candidate information on here and your email as soon as I get it from SGA. In the meantime, please do 3 pages of research on your candidate and the position printed off for your job folder. Please have a visual brief prepared for when you speak to the candidate. Have this printed off for your job folder on Monday. If you can have 25 thumbnails of logotype, poster, guerrilla and item for Monday that would be great to keep pace of things but since you might not get a chance to speak to your candidate over the weekend we will have a check of these on Wednesday. Just remember this is a quick turn around on things so don't fall behind. See you Monday!

Spring Break - It's finally here!!

For Tuesday, you must have your poster up in the hallway in between the library and the first door in the PAC. IT MUST BE IN YOUR CLIP FRAME AND PORTRAIT STYLE. There will be nails out there for you to hang your work on. You must have your guerrilla located on campus and your standup must be in the main hallway of PAC.

We will critique on Wednesday. We will meet in the PAC hallway instead of meeting in the classroom.
Invite your director the critique. Be interested to hear his / her comments on the work to see how you matched to their vision. Additional bonus credit will be given if you director comes toward your critique portion of the grade. We will start at 8 am sharp. Make sure you are there and ready to go. You don't need to dress for this critique since we will be tromping around campus.

Make sure to get good photos of your guerrillas in the environment as well as your stand ups (can't tell you how many students I have over the years that regretted rushing this and not getting good images of this work).

JOB FOLDERS
LEFT SIDE (starting from the bottom and working up)
1. Research (2 pages - can be on your topic of the film)
2. Visual Brief (1 page)
3. Design Brief (1 page)

CHANGE IN THE SCHEDULE

Hi guys,

Since some of you have been having problems getting connected with directors with the change up we are pushing back the thumbnail deadline to Wednesday but be prepared to hit the ground running with a heavy work day on Wednesday. If you have thumbnails for you movie move ahead and we will check things out on Wednesday. As far as the resubmit for the business cards, please have them in by 5 pm in their frames so I can grade them. Because of pushing these back this assignment will be not be included in your midterm grades. Hope this helps. Pass the word along.

Gutenberg and beyond

Hi everyone,

For those of you not in class today. Please watch this documentary...there are four parts...follow the links to see the rest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUXIStZ3vSo Also don't forget to get some notes from other people in class. This documentary on Gutenberg and info will be essential for your first essay test.

No homework over the weekend. We will be meeting at the Ryan Center (third floor of Jennings) at 2 pm on Monday. We will be viewing 16th century and 17th century texts that used a version of Gutenberg's press to print on. See you then!

10 Business Research

Hi guys,

Please have 10 Businesses selected. Again no photography, churches or eye doctors.

In your job folder for each businesses / You can also have a job folder for the 5 businesses that will be logos and another folder for the 5 businesses that will be logotypes...this will help cut down on the size of one job folder. In the job folder you need for each business...
1. Copy of old logo
2. Research 3 to 5 pages
3. Write 30 descriptive words of the business on a sheet of paper

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Friday, Feb. 8th

Start collecting local businesses to do logos. You will need 10 different businesses. These need to be not the same business. You will be making 5 logotype designs and 5 logo designs. Start thinking about what companies you think you would be able to talk to about their designs and possibly move this out into the real world. Don't do chains or places that have too large of a national presence that it would not be feasible for you to be able to get a foot in the door with your look. No churches, photography or eye doctors logos are allowed. Too hard to think outside of the box for a rebrand. Look elsewhere. Have fun with this and take a brain break until Friday. See you then!

Uber Crests

UBER Crests

Take 10 logos from your pictures today. Pull the photos into illustrator and recreate. Use only a portion of the regular logo in the crest. Think symmetry when you can. Make the eye think that they belong together. Courtney - please take a trek around your room and find 10 logos to recreate. Print the final logo on 8.5x11 / portrait. Make the logo 5 inches by 5 inches and center. At 6.75 pull a guide across the width of the page and one inch down from the 5x5 box pull a guide. Start your text box at the corner. The text should be the logos used numbered in GillsSans 11 pt font and 12 point leading. Here are a few examples that were shown in class. Due Wednesday. NO AIGA MEETING TONIGHT!! WILL MEET NEXT WEEK MONDAY, FEB. 11TH AT 5 PM.

Friday, February 1, 2013

Hi guys,

Typeface needs to be garamond but you can play with the leading and the point size for these. Make sure that it can be read and that you have 10 rebus sequences on the page. Make an effort to make the icons look like they belong together and are made by the same person. Have a great weekend and see you Monday!
