FOND FARWELL

Hey guys,

Your resumes and package designs job folders are all outside my door. Please have a safe and wonderful summer! Be sure to keep up with your design skills over the summer. It's very easy to slip back to using bad fonts and bad kerning if you don't practice. If I don't have you in the fall make sure you stop in and say hi every once in a while. I look forward to seeing the rest of you in the Fall and moving onto Typography!

Monday, May 5

FOR MONDAY
Please select an off brand, low brand or local brand of box and bottle. These two must function either together (where box houses bottle) or work as a set (aka pasta and olive oil). Please take a photo of the original brand that you are wanting to transform. You will print these off and put them in your job folder. You will redesign the logo type (product name) for these two items. If you are doing separate set of box and bottle you will need to have two logotype thumbnails sheets per box and bottle (total of four). You need to have a visual brief for your box and your bottle. One page for each item printed off. Please print off five pages of research on your company as well for your job folder. This will help with coming up with ideas for design and how old the company is or any benefit features you might not know to the product. Purchase a new bottle for this bottle to go into. Bring this to class. Also purchase or find a box that you can tear apart to make into a template for the box on Monday. BRING SCISSORS, GLUE STICK, TAPE TO CLASS ALONG WITH YOUR JOB FOLDER AND THE ACTUAL BOX AND BOTTLE THAT YOU ARE WANTING TO WORK WITH.

FOR MONDAY
ALL CAMPAIGN GUERRILLAS MUST BE DOWN TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT FOR THE PROJECT. Clean up and restoring our spaces back to what it was before is an important part of the project. You are only responsible for the guerrillas. The posters can be taken down the candidate.

You need to have your business resume printed with your logo. There should be a design on the back side of this. Have the rough draft of your cover letter printed out as well.

URGENT - BEFORE BREAK! AND Critique on Monday

URGENT - Take down your posters and stand ups today must be down before break Mr Benson needs the hallway for 3D. Cannot guarantee and the safety of your posters and material if not taken down before break.

MONDAY CRITIQUE
Meet outside of the Humanities department bulletin board at start of class in the PAC. Do not need to dress up. Need to have your guerrillas up in area we can walk to. Must be approved by area supervisor if in someone else's professional space (aka if using someone's office desk or placing it at Union station or post office) Poster must be up on a regular bulletin board (remember needs to compete with clutter). Item you can have on your person during critique. (aka wear your button sticker or other item)

Monday, April 14

Critique on Monday at 11 am in the PAC hallway. Must have standup and work in the hallway in the PAC by 8 am. Currently there is other work in the hallway. We will have this down by Sunday afternoon and the nails will be put up then for your poster work. Please have your posters framed and your teammate framed next to yours. No need to dress up. Clients coming to critique or responding to the design via email or facebook and printed off put in job folder will be extra credit for the assignment. Prize money is associated with these so make sure that you put your best foot forward on this one.

SGA ASSIGNMENT
ASSIGNMENTS ARE IN - CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR CONTACT INFO! Please talk to your candidate with a visual brief and have at least one thumbnail page for each element (logotype, poster, guerilla and item). These will be due on April 20th to the candidates for files and your material must be up for critique on Monday the 21st. Sorry guys deadlines are the nature of the beast with clients. You can do this!

Monday, April 7

You need to be cranking on this over break. Only a few more work days left before the 14th. Be in contact with each other as you work through ideas over break. Have your logotypes (2 pages - together) finished, have 3 pages (a piece) poster thumbnails and 3 pages (a piece) standup thumbnails. Please be working toward your roughs at this point. Again because of the nature of the beast with working with clients these folders will not be checked in progress but please remember that you need to complete each step of the process before moving forward. Thumbnails do you no good after the fact. We will use Monday as a solid work day so bring materials to dummy and start working on your stand ups.

Contact your director as a team. Don't both of you email different emails instead use the lovely CC option. You can talk in person, facebook, whatever. Please print off the conversation for your job folder or take notes from the conversation put in your job folder. This will count as your research. After first contact with your director, come back with a visual brief. Start generating thumbnails with your partner. Please have these completed printed out along with research, visual brief in your job folders for Wednesday. We will start working on thumbnails for posters and working out standups.

FINALS MUST BE - Printed front and back. Cut to size (8.5x11 must be printed on 11x17 if cutting to size with bleed). Business cards must be printed on card stock and cut to size. Envelopes must be glued together and functional. 

No need to dress up for this - doing a fast and furious kind of critique on this. We will be starting the design process for our film festival work on Monday.

CRITIQUE DAY!! Please have all 10 business represented by 10 8.5x11 print outs. Please make sure that all your five required logotypes and five required logos are represented. Prints should be in color. White background ONLY!! Centered on both the vertical and horizontal axises. Portrait orientation. You will be marked off on the critique portion of your grade if these rules are not followed. No name or anything else besides the logo should be on the paper.

Please have two additional roughs per business. Due at the start of class on Monday. I talked to each one of you in class. Go in the direction of the logo indicated during the talk. Continue to work through placement issues, ideas, kerning and color in these final versions. Work in color if you haven't already. Make sure they are in separate new pdfs. The final versions of these logos will be due on Wednesday printed out on 8.5x11. More details on that on Monday.

Please choose five businesses to complete a logo and five businesses to work out into a logotype. You will complete two roughs for each business - working through the new look. Please save as separate documents - pdf / letter / saved in folder of business. Will have 20 digital roughs for Monday. Must have all 20. We will have a job folder check on Monday to make sure you have everything. Make sure you hit this deadline!! Grade consequences will be in effect.

Make sure they are pdfs. 2 of the roughs must be logos (image and text) 1 must be a pure logotype (just font) and 1 must be a logotype (font and image embedded into the font). Total of 40 roughs will be due on Wednesday. You can do these in color. Make them in Illustrator and centered on a 8.5 x11 document. Keep in mind your target markets when doing them.

You must have these roughs finished along with your thumbnails to receive full credit for the project. If you already have missed a deadline - keep hitting this deadline as a priority.

Make sure they are done and the rest of the job folder up to date for Wednesday. We will start on the rough process and talk about design decisions on Wednesday. Be thinking about numbers, color and figure ground (double meanings) as you are thumbnailing. Good luck!

Okay so you knew homework would be coming especially since we only have met twice in the past two weeks.

Please finish and revise your set of business research. Have five pages of research per business ready to go. THINK LOCAL AND APPROACHABLE:) Have the job folder assembled for Monday.

Take five of your businesses. Create 9 square thumbnail page (your typical thumbnail pages) - 5 pages per business. 2.5 pages (22 of these thumbnails) will be logotypes (must look like the font that you are choosing in the thumbnail - tracing is acceptable for this / don't forget to find ways to embed an image) and 2.5 pages (23 of these thumbnails) are logos (symbol and type). Total of 45 thumbnails per business. Complete five businesses for Monday. If you want to continue on...all 10 business thumbnails will need to be completed for Wednesday next week.

Feb 5 update

I caught this nasty flu bug that has been going around and it's been a long night. No class today - please come with the following items for Monday. 

1. Sochi typeface and pictograms poster in PDF format - see last email for specifics 
2. Research ten different businesses (must be small or local as in your hometown...only can do Jackson businesses if you are from here) that you have experience with. Bring a print out of their current logo and five pages of printed out research about the company.
 
Here's the types of businesses that are off the list to create a logo for because hard to make them look original. 
Photography businesses 
Churches 
Chiropractors 
Jewelry stores 

You may not repeat the same type of business! Do not do six veterinary clinics because trust me after the first one they all start to look the same and you will become bored! 

Start a job folder for all this research and come ready to dig deep for our first project. See you on Monday. Don't forge poster sale is tomorrow and to tell all your friends!

Please finish the following have in a pdf / B&W / 11x17 document with .125 bleed for Wednesday. Does not need to be printed. Must be ready to be shown digitally at the start of class.

Make a logotype for the Sochi 2014 olympics. Logotype is just the typeface (select a new one from the current logotype). It can only say Sochi 2014. Must have a Russian or winter feel to the logotype.

Select six current winter sports to make pictograms for. Base your pictogram on the feel of the logo. Please design these in illustrator in black and white and pull into InDesign document.

InDesign document should be
4 rows
3 columns
.5 for the gutters and alleys
1 inch margins
Please set your logo and your pictograms so that they fit to the grid. You can make your own design decisions based on the layout of the grid.
