Don't forget to get to grab your frames out of the hallway. Those of you that had your frames grabbed out of the hallway already they are at my office door. Please stop by and pick them up when you get a chance. Your packages should be ready to be picked up on Thursday afternoon, so you can grab those then with your final project grade. Good luck tomorrow and I'll see you then! Also don't forget to clean off your computer stations...they will be wiped over the summer with all the files gone to the depths of the trash so please make sure that you have everything off there by Thursday. For project must haves check the previous post.

Tuesday, April 26th

Don't forget...You need to have a poster 11x17 in the hallway on one of the bulletin boards up on Tuesday (date changed due to holiday...if you could get the files to them sooner that would be a good for your client and not just the course). You also need to have an approved guerilla marketing piece and alternative marketing piece. These you are only responsible for one item but if your candidate likes the idea you may give them the files to produce more. Campaign items will be up for the following week. The election will be held later in the week and all campaign items will have to come down by the following Sunday. Don't forget to turn in your 500 word summary electronically that Tuesday morning. We will meet over in the PAC hallway in front of the art department to start the search for your items. It will be a walking critique if you would like your candidate there let them know. Bonus points could be involved:)

Have a wonderful Easter and safe trip!

Working with your Client

Hi guys,

So today you got schooled in politics. Now it's time to test out your skill set. For this project you need to have:

1. logotype for your candidate (also brainstorm a slogan together with your candidate)
2. poster (11x17 you are responsible for having this one up) the candidate will have a budget and you will give over the files to print so that they can put the rest up for their campaign.
3. guerilla marketing campaign item (this has be approved by me before it goes up)
4. alternative piece (this can be apparel, buttons, hats - think fun and unusual to get noticed)

You must have you roughs for each piece of this for Thursday. If you do not get these approved by both the professor and client you may not put them up. The finals need to be in the hallway and in the hands of your client by Monday, April 25th. Campaign week is all the following week. We will do critique on location on Tuesday, April 26th starting in the main hallway and then working way around the campus to see where things got put up and how the campaign deals with additional poster noise. Sorry for the tight deadline guys but this is how it is in the real world working for clients. Those of you missing in class today you should have received a text notifying you of who your candidate is and their phone number. Please get in touch with them and brainstorm ideas before Thursday.

Critique on Tuesday, March 29

Hi guys,

Make sure that you get ahold of your director over break. You must have a 11x17 poster full bleed in color, under glass for Tuesday. Think about matching the feel of the poster to the typography and the look. Don't forget to include the names of the actors / directors and other worker information at the bottom of the poster. Look on dafont for movie poster fonts. Also pay attention to thinking about copywriting/slogans.

You will need to have a summary turned in before class at 8 am on Tuesday. This needs to be at three inches down / gill sans and 10 pt. Please save it as your last name_designproject02. Please be sure to have you poster under glass / portrait style hung up in front of the library in the PAC. We will critique the posters outside of the library on Tuesday. Please meet over there instead of class on Tuesday. Remember to keep your sketches and ideas for the business card project. There is no sketchbook grade for this project so make sure to make the design summarys good.

Note to SCALE - If you would please do a overall film festival poster. This needs to advertise the festival and give the schedule. Try and keep the color scheme that they have going on. Check out www.uu.edu/events/filmfestival for all the details that you will need to include on it. Make sure to have it under glass for Tuesday.

business card package

Hi guys,

Pick one of your strongest logos. You are going to develop our a business package for this one logo. You need 25 thumbnails per item that will be included in the package / 75 thumbnails total / 25 for business card / 25 for letterhead / 25 for envelope. Think about the front and back of these items. I'm including some links to start you thinking outside the box. On illustrator you can find templates for these in the template section to get the dimensions for these items. We will discuss on Tuesday and critique this on Thursday. Also you will be getting your director on Thursday or Wednesday for your film fest poster design so be prepared and stay on top of things this week because these projects are going to start to overlap quickly.

Critique of 10 logos on Thursday

Hey guys,

Have your final 10 logos printed on 8.5x11 in full color. Please make them centered and 5" in proportion(aka if they are a logotype...must be five inches in one direction at least). Make sure that you have five distinct logotypes and five distinct logos. Please format so that only the logo is on the front page. Write your name in pencil on the back on the sheets. You must have you sketchbook completely caught up and ready to be checked. No summary for these. No dressing up. We are just going to be taking in a lot of logos with this critique and quickly building on this for the next project. If you have any questions or want me to check things out between now and critique stop by my office or grab me after or before other classes that you have with me. Good luck!

Thursday, Feb. 24

Hi guys,

Spilt your logos in half...25 logos (symbol and word) and 25 logotypes. Do 50 sketches for each logo in the style that you have designated...you don't have to do half logo and half logotype. You need to have 50 thumbnails numbered for each business. You need five businesses finished for Thursday. Also be applying the things that you learned in class. Do brainstorming out to the side to help you develop your logo imagery as you go. Remember what helped a logo's message and what hurt. Think about the way that the business conducts business is there a way to incorporate the number meaning that we talked about today into the logo? Think abstractly...remember churches and photography businesses hard to stay away from being too literal. Also...side note when I did this project as a student I had 150 thumbnails to do per business so no whining! I've been there...you need to do this development...it is essential practice to good branding. Don't forget to number!!

Tuesday, Feb. 22

Use 10 elements of your logo to make a crest. These must be printed out in color for Tuesday on 8.5x11 with parameters given in class. Also you need to select 10 businesses that you can create a logo. These can be local to your hometown or anywhere. You must be familiar with the business and how it operates. You will create 5 logotypes and 5 symbol logos (combination of symbol and logotype) in this set of logos. Have these original logos in class on Tuesday. Be prepared to have you sketchbooks on Monday. We will be talking more about logo anatomy. Also YOU DON'T have to dress up or have these underglass. They will be part of your sketchbooks.
